Splash House doesn't have a bad hour, it has three good ones at once

A lineup asks which artists you like. A schedule asks which ones you are prepared to miss. Those are very different questions, and only the second one has an answer you have to live with.

Set times for Splash House Weekend 2 are in — 42 sets across four venues, running 14 to 16 August. We read all of them, and the schedule is unusually decisive about what it wants from you.

Zero dead minutes

Here is the number the schedule is built around.

Across Saturday and Sunday, from the first set of each day to the last, there are zero minutes when fewer than three hotels are playing at once. Not a lull. Not a changeover. Every stage runs seamlessly — when one set ends, the next one on that stage begins in the same minute, on all three stages, both days.

Most festivals give you gaps. A stage goes dark for twenty minutes, you get a drink, you walk somewhere. This one never does. Saturday's pool programming opens at 1:00pm with Chica, Wet Velvet and Pitchblack all starting simultaneously at three different hotels, and it stays three-wide until the closers.

That is a hard thing to build. Three rooms, two days, and nobody standing around waiting for a changeover. The trade is that you will see about a third of it — not because you chose badly, but because there is three times more of it running than one person can stand in front of.

The stagger is built for hopping, right up to the last hour

The set lengths are deliberately uneven — 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 minutes — which pushes the start times out of alignment. Consecutive sets across the weekend begin 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes apart. That is a schedule designed for hopping. Leave one hotel mid-set, arrive at the next one for a fresh start.

Then the last hour arrives and asks you to commit.

Saturday closes with three sets that begin fifteen minutes apart at three different hotels: Riordan at 7:00pm, Alison Wonderland at 7:15pm, OMNOM at 7:30pm. Sunday does the same thing — D.O.D at 8:00pm, Whethan at 8:15pm, Prospa at 8:30pm.

None of those six sets has a published end time, which in our data almost always marks a closer. Fifteen minutes is not enough to move between hotels and it was never meant to be. The end of each day is a single choice: pick a pool, stay in it.

The people you cannot half-catch are the openers

There are eight sets this weekend that sit entirely inside another set at a different hotel — no overlap to split, no second half to catch. Every one of them is in the first ninety minutes of a day.

Wet Velvet's 30 minutes sit inside Pitchblack's 45, which sit inside Chica's 90. Sunday, Matt Faulk is fully inside Devdea and inside the mix contest winner's hour. These are the shortest sets on the bill, and in our catalog most of these artists are playing their only indexed date of the season.

Turning up at 1:00pm is not a small thing here. It is the only window where the person on stage may never get another one.

The Hilton is carrying the touring load

One hotel is doing something different. Three artists on this bill sit in the top 25 of our Most Booked count for the season — Know Good at 11, YDG at 17, Whethan at 20 — and all three play the Hilton.

It is also where the weekend's real travel lands. Avello plays the Hilton on Saturday afternoon and is on stage at Bass Canyon in George, Washington roughly 29 hours later. Know Good comes the other way, off a Friday night set at Breakaway Michigan and into a Saturday afternoon pool about 25 hours after. YDG makes the same crossing for Sunday.
