Dreamstate SoCal's touring acts mostly skip the rest of America

Two in three of the touring acts on the Queen Mary bill play no other US festival we track. Their other dates are in Rotterdam, Pattaya and Sydney.

Dreamstate SoCal plays the Queen Mary in Long Beach on 20 and 21 November. It has 85 named acts. Thirty-six of them also play another festival we track.

Twenty-four of those 36 play no other festival in the US.

That's two in three. Across the other 43 US festivals we hold with 20 or more named acts, it's 115 of 1,283, about one in eleven. Seventeen of those 43 have none at all.

How far ahead that is

We counted the same thing for every US bill in our catalog: of the acts who play somewhere else, how many play only outside the country.

Time Warp Los Angeles, a week later, is second at 10 of 26. That's under two in five, against Dreamstate's two in three. The three behind Dreamstate are all techno bills, two of them Time Warps.

The coverage cuts the other way, which makes the number stronger, not weaker. 97 of the 154 upcoming festivals we hold are in the US. If anything, our catalog makes it easier to find an act a second US date, not harder.

Where they go instead

The 24 turn up in 12 other countries. Eleven of them play the Netherlands, ten play Thailand and six play Australia.

A State Of Trance Rotterdam in February shares 12 acts with Dreamstate SoCal, more than any other festival we track. Ferry Corsten, Vini Vici, Aly & Fila and Dash Berlin are on both, and none of them is on another US bill we hold.

The December run through Thailand is the other big pull. Tomorrowland Thailand has Ferry Corsten, Vini Vici, Aly & Fila, ARTBAT and Infected Mushroom. EDC Thailand has Paul van Dyk and MaRLo. Paul van Dyk's artist page lists two upcoming shows: Long Beach, then Phuket.

Why it looks like this

Part of it is the music. Dreamstate is a trance festival, and trance in America has very few festivals of its own. The only other US festival in our catalog tagged trance with a lineup out is Trance, Bro! Winter Festival in New York, with 12 named acts. Four of them are on the Queen Mary bill too.

Part of it is the brand. Some of the foreign dates are Dreamstate's own: Dreamstate Vancouver a week later, and Sydney and Melbourne in February. Only one of the 24 plays nothing but other Dreamstates. That's VisionV, in Sydney and Melbourne.

Of the 12 who do have another US date, four get it at Trance, Bro!. The other eight play bigger mixed bills. Above & Beyond is also at Seismic in Austin. Marie Vaunt plays seven other festivals we track, more than anyone else on the bill.

The rest of the bill, straight

None of the ten acts on our Most Booked board is on this lineup. Forty-nine of the 85 play no other festival we track. That's 58%, the middle of our 77 festivals with 20 or more named acts. Six other festivals overlap 20 and 21 November and they share one act with Dreamstate SoCal between them, Reinier Zonneveld, who also plays Time Warp Mexico City that weekend.

"No other US festival" means none we track. Some of these acts will play American clubs this winter, and our catalog doesn't count those.

If you're going, the practical point is simple. For most of the touring names on this bill, the Queen Mary is their only US festival date we know of. The next one is an ocean away. Open the lineup in the app and follow the ones you'd be sorry to miss.
